FIRST remote image from the Boeing Observatory!

This may look like an ordinary picture of our Sun, but it marks a very important milestone for the museum’s new state-of-the-art Boeing Observatory. This is the FIRST image taken by students controlling our observatory telescope and cameras remotely. This image was taken by Lillie Hardison’s 8th graders at Gibbes Middle School (Richland I) during a distance learning session last week. Over the museum’s remote desktop Internet link, Mrs. Hardison’s students:

-Opened the observatory dome
-Moved the telescope to point at the Sun
-Centered the image of the Sun using “fine motion” controls in our telescope control software
-Set the camera exposure
-Took the image
