Astronomy Day – Space Week

Sat., July 25 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Space Week fun continues at the State Museum with a cosmically cool day all about astronomy! The museum will be partnering with local community organizations to increase awareness and appreciation for both our world and the universe beyond with special demonstrations, exhibits and shows. Everything is included with museum general admission or membership unless other noted with ($).

  • Virtual talk with Ian Hewitt, a NASA Solar System Ambassador, member of the Grand Strand Amateur Astronomers, and Coastal Carolina University Astronomy Professor at 10:30 a.m.

  • Talk with John Hodge, a NASA Solar System Ambassador and member of the Bethune Observers Group at 1:30 p.m.

  • Educator and Curator led tours of the Apollo 50: Journey to the Moon exhibit at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

  • Starstruck Trivia at 12:30 p.m! Test your knowledge as we take you to the moon and back to explore South Carolina science, technology, and astronomy.

  • Take home astronomy projects available from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Pick up a fun at-home activity including, Happy Birthday Hubble LED hats, pipe cleaner constellations and straw rockets

  • Explore the newly renovated space gallery featuring meteorites and more.

  • Enjoy a Live Sky planetarium show ($).

  • ExperienceThe Martian 4D in the 4D Theater ($).

The State Museum will have health and safety precautions in place, including managing capacities in the museum’s galleries, planetarium and 4-D theater to facilitate social distancing as well as frequent cleaning throughout the building and between shows. Per City of Columbia Emergency Ordinance, face coverings will be required for guests aged 10 and above.
