S.T.E.A.M. at Home: Are You Ready to Rock?

Coming in an array of cool sizes, shapes, and colors, rocks are all around us! Although they form the foundations of our physical world, how much do you REALLY know about rocks? Join Ms. Laura and special guest Ms. Timia as we discover why rocks – rock! We’ll delve into rock composition, formation, and classification and end our exploration with an EDIBLE journey through the rock cycle. For those about to rock, we salute you!

Supplies Needed

Edible Rock Journey:

Marshmallow paste

· Graham crackers (x3 per participant)

· Plastic knife (please have an adult help if using a real knife)

· Spoon

· Wax paper (x2 per participant)

· Starbursts (at least 3 DIFFERENT colors per participant)

· Melting chocolate

· Small pot for heat chocolate

· Large stirring spoon

· Candy mold

· Hot plate (or your kitchen stove)

· Chocolate syrup (OPTIONAL)

*Don’t have the above ingredients. Not to worry. This activity is not only tasty, but SUPER adaptable!

You can substitute:

· Peanut or almond butter for marshmallow paste

· Any tasty cookie or cracker for graham crackers

· Any “squishable” taffy or chewy candy in assorted colors for Starbursts

· Any melting candy for melting chocolate

· Small “bathroom” cups or foil baking cups for candy molds
