Virtual Book Club – “The Invention of Wings” by Sue Monk Kidd

September 22

Tues., Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m.

The State Museum is excited to launch our first virtual book club!

We’ll be reading “The Invention of Wings” by Sue Monk Kidd to celebrate our exhibition “A Voice of Her Own: South Carolina Women and Politics.” The book is historical fiction following the life of Sarah Grimké, real-life abolitionist and suffragist, and Hetty “Handful” Grimké, based on a real-life enslaved woman. The story begins in 1803 Charleston when for her eleventh birthday, Sarah is given ownership of ten-year-old Handful. The story follows their lives for the next thirty-five years as they both strive for lives of their own.

Join us for a virtual discussion of the book on Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m. led by Curator of Cultural History, JoAnn Zeise and other museum staff members. We’ll discuss the book and answer questions posed by the audience.

The featured book, “The Invention of Wings,” is available for purchase in the museum store, The Cotton Mill Exchange, or at your preferred bookseller.

Registration is required and capacity is limited. Click HERE to register now!
