FIELD TRIPS: Cultural History Museum Experiences

The State Museum offers a variety of field trip experiences focused on cultural history for visiting students. The experiences listed below are FREE to South Carolina school students, unless otherwise indicated, and must be booked and finalized with the museum’s Group Visits Department two weeks in advance. Please carefully read over the list of programs, choose those you wish to reserve for your field trip and do one of the following: submit a Field Trip Reservation Request Form, email group_visits@scmuseum.org or call (803) 898-4999.

EDUCATION STATIONS

To make visiting the museum easier for teachers and more interactive for students, the museum will have docents positioned throughout popular museum exhibits to greet you and your students and talk about our artifacts. The Education Station schedule is dependent on the number of visiting school groups and time of year. In general, Education Stations run between 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Please email Jeff.Powley@scmuseum.org for more information.

State Museum Highlights Tour
Duration: 45 minutes
Available Dates: Mondays and Wednesdays.
Available Times: 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1 p.m.
Cost: Free for South Carolina students

Maximum Capacity: 150 participants including adults
This tour is a great introduction to the State Museum and highlights some of the museum’s most popular exhibits. Docents guide students through museum galleries that present South Carolina’s natural history, cultural history, science, technology and art. Schools will be asked to break students into small groups of 10.

Docents will cover a variety of topics, including Native American life, European exploration, the American Revolution, South Carolina State Symbols, slavery, the H.L. Hunley and the Jenny Store. Students will be asked to think about life during different time periods and how we have become the state we are today. Schools will be asked to break into groups of 10.
