FIELD TRIPS: Natural History Museum Experiences

The State Museum offers visiting SC students several museum field trip experiences featuring natural history. The experiences listed below are FREE to South Carolina school students, unless otherwise indicated, and must be booked and finalized with the museum’s Group Visits Department two weeks in advance. Please carefully read over the list of programs, choose those you wish to reserve for your field trip and do one of the following: submit a Field Trip Reservation Request Form, email group_visits@scmuseum.org or call (803) 898-4999.

EDUCATION STATIONS

To make visiting the museum easier for teachers and more interactive for students, the museum will have docents positioned throughout popular museum exhibits to greet you and your students and talk about our artifacts. The Education Station schedule is dependent on the number of visiting school groups and time of year. In general, Education Stations run between 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Please email Jeff.Powley@scmuseum.org for more information.

State Museum Highlights Tour

Available Dates: Mondays and Wednesdays.
Available Times: 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1 p.m.
Cost: Free for South Carolina students

This tour is a great introduction to the State Museum and highlights some of the museum’s most popular exhibits. Docents guide students through museum galleries that present South Carolina’s natural history, cultural history, science, technology and art. Impressive Traces of Fossils
Duration: 30-45 minutes

This is unique, hands-on program gives students the opportunity to touch real fossils and specimens from the State Museum’s expansive collection. Paleontologists are very similar to detectives. Examining fossils can tell a great deal about the world, and what it was like millions of years ago.

Critter Classification
Duration: 30-45 minutes
Available Times: Tues. through Fri. at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1 p.m.

Style: Auditorium
Maximum Capacity: 80 participants
SC 2014 Academic Standards for Science: 6.S.1, 6.L.4
This auditorium-style program will allow students to sink their teeth into living organisms. A variety of questions will be answered, including what is a living organism? Why do owls have such big eyes? And why do snakes like to lie in the road? Students will get a better understanding of the differences between an invertebrate and a vertebrate, how exothermic and endothermic organisms are different and how animals have adapted to better suit their environment. Students will have the chance to observe real animal specimens as they learn.

 


 

SEVENTH

Living Soil
Duration: 30-45 minutes
Available Times: Tues. through Fri. at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1 p.m.
Cost: Free for South Carolina students
Style: Classroom
Maximum Capacity: 25 participants
SC 2014 Academic Standards for Science: 7.L.3, 7.EC.5
Time to get down and dirty as students dig into ground beneath their feet. Students will explore soil profiles and examine the complex ecosystem of soil as they conduct pH tests. They will also analyze soil particles and the organisms that live in it. The lesson will cover how bacteria are not only very helpful, but a necessary part of our soil ecosystem. Students will also get the chance to view tiny organisms using microscopes.
