Girl Scouts Badge Clinics

Know a Girl Scout looking to satisfy badge recommendations? Well, we’ve got three perfect opportunities with Girl Scouts Badge Clinics at the State Museum in January, February and March. Each clinic will have a different theme to help scouts reach their goals.

Scouts will learn the basics of programming in Building Bots and LEGO Laughs by creating their Binary Baubles to wear, go Full STEAM Ahead by building their own Doodlebots and follow the footsteps of some brave women in Code Breakers. Each clinic will include general admission to the museum and fun items for scouts to take home.

Registration is now available through the Girls Scouts of South Carolina Mountains to Midlands at the links posted below. Any questions or late registration requests should be directed to Girls Scouts staff. Registration will close 1-week prior to each clinic or when full. For registration questions please contact Morgan Nelson at mnelson@gssc-mm.org.

If you have questions about program activities please contact scouts@scmuseum.org.

Full STEAM Ahead!

February 3, 10, 17, 24, 2018 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.

What can art teach us about physics? Are robots simply tools or can machines be artists as well? Join SCSM as we go Full STEAM Ahead into a world of physics fun to answer these questions! Scouts will get into the swing of things using scientific and mathematical principles to make Pendulum Paintings. Next, we’ll explore technology to make connections and understand simple circuits with “Squishy Circuits”. Finally, Scouts will put on their engineering hats and design their very own DoodleBot. Scouts will use their creations to determine whether or not a robot’s drawing is really art.

Code Breakers

March 3, 10, 17, 24, 2018 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.

At a time when men and women’s behavior was subject to a strict code of conduct – and women’s rights were just a dream of the future – some bold ladies broke all the rules and risked everything . . . as spies. Follow in the footsteps of these brave women who traded petticoats for trousers and fearlessly faced the enemy in the hopes of saving the day. We’ll also look at the various types of encryption they used – and try our hands at a little code breaking of our own!
