Second Shift Twosdays2ndShift

Every Tuesday from 5 – 8 p.m.


The museum is open late every Tuesday until 8 p.m. for Second Shift Twosdays. Every Tuesday evening there will be something special offered, which may include programs, planetarium shows, 4D movies, night observing, exhibit previews, special discounts and more.  The entire museum will also stay open during these extended Tuesday evenings.  Second Shift Twosdays are included with membership or general admission. Planetarium and 4D shows are an additional price.
Guests can also explore four floors of South Carolina art, cultural history, natural history and science/technology!  There is an additional fee to see the laser light shows, 4D theater shows and for admission to the blockbuster exhibit, Dinosaurs: A Bite Out of Time.

Merry Mondays in the Cotton Mill ExchangeCME logo 250x145

Each Monday before Christmas from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Enjoy special holiday music and gourmet South Carolina-made food samplings while you shop at the Cotton Mill Exchange museum store on Merry Mondays in December. The store is the perfect South Carolina gift destination and carries several local gourmet products made in South Carolina, including coffees, teas, grits, cookies, candies, BBQ sauces, jams and more. Store purchases of $50 or more during “Merry Mondays” will include complementary gift wrapping. The store is open during normal museum hours. Museum admission is not required to shop in the store.

Columbia Marionette Theatrepuppetshow
Dec. 20 and Jan. 3
The acclaimed Columbia Marionette Theatre will entertain audiences of all ages during their live holiday puppetry performances at the State Museum.  “Santa’s Holiday Party” will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20 and “Professor Brainstorm’s Brilliant Idea” will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3. Both shows are included with museum general admission.






Member Polar Express 4D Party

Fri., Dec. 19 from 6 – 9 p.m. 


All museum members are invited to hop on board the Polar Express for a special members-only Polar Express Party! Enjoy 50% OFF tickets to The Polar Express 4D Experience, free cookies, snacks, hot chocolate and a special visit from Santa. Be sure to wear your most comfortable PJs and members can bring a non-member buddy for $5.








FrozenFestFrozen Fest

Mon., Dec. 29 from 5 – 8 p.m. 


The State Museum presents FrozenFest, a magical evening to spark young guests’ imagination. During the event, guests will watch Disney’s Frozen, meet and greet with their favorite Frozen characters and enjoy crafts, games and a more.  There will be light snacks and refreshments. Frozen costumes are highly encouraged.  FrozenFest tickets are $12.50 per person and $10 for museum members.







First Citizens First SundayFCFirstSunday_Logo

Sun., Jan. 4 from 12 to 5 p.m.
General admission to the South Carolina State Museum is only $1 for guests on First Citizens First Sunday!
Included in general admission, guests can explore four floors of South Carolina art, cultural history, natural history and science/technology, including the brand new observatory and the new Robert B. Arial Collection of Historical Astronomy located on the fourth floor.
For an additional price, guests can experience the museum’s new planetarium and 4D theater, as well as the blockbuster exhibit, Dinosaurs: A Bite Out of Time.

Museum Road ShowMuseum Road SHow

Sat., Jan. 17 from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. 
The Museum Road Show, one of the South Carolina State Museum’s most popular events is back with a special Civil War theme to commemorate the 150 anniversary of the Burning of Columbia. Experts will offer informal appraisals of military memorabilia, fine art, textiles, furniture, jewelry and more. There is a limit of four items per person. Tickets are $25 for the first item ($20 for museum members), $35 for two items ($28 members), $45 for three items ($36 members) and $50 for four items ($40 members). Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling (803) 898-4999 or the day of the event.



Through the Fire

Thurs., Jan. 29 from 7 – 10 p.m. 
Join the South Carolina State Museum and South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum at Through the Fire, an evening event to commemorate the 150 anniversary of the Burning of Columbia and the end of the Civil War. The event will feature Civil War-inspired food and drinks with a dramatic reading of accounts from those who witnessed Sherman’s path through the state. Actors will read from diaries, newspapers, military accounts and letters in the museum’s new BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Planetarium creating an immersive experience. There will also be a showing of 3D Civil War photographs presented by the Relic Room in the museum’s new Rev. Dr. Solomon Jackson, JR 4D Theater. Ticket information will be available soon!



Civil War Lecture Series: By the Red Glare Discussion and Book Signing with Mark Sibley-Jones

Sun., Feb. 1 from 3 – 4:30 p.m. 
Led by Mark Sibley-Jones, By the Red Glare Discussion and book signing will reflect how the famous burning of Columbia affected and changed the Capital City and South Carolina. Lecture admission is included with museum general admission.



History Day

Sat., Feb. 14 from 10 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. 
The South Carolina State Museum and the South Carolina Relic Room and Military Museum are partnering to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Sherman’s march across the state during the State Museum’s annual History Day event. Several artifacts associated with the march will be on display, and Civil War military reenactors will be on hand demonstrating the lives of soldiers. The day will also include the opening of Finding Freedom’s Home: Archeology at Mitchelville, presentations by Joseph McGill on African-American soldiers, Emily Cooper on Civil War First Lady of South Carolina Lucy Holcomb Pickens and associate archivist at the Missouri Historical Museum Molly Kodner on approximately 160 letters written by Union soldier James Love to his fiancé as a P.O.W. after he was captured by Confederates. In addition, learn about popular music during the Civil War from musician Jim Dreyfus and listen to centuries-old spirituals in the praise-house, call-and-response style from the Mt. Zion Singers from Charleston. There will also be hands-on learning activities and special movie presentations.



College Art Day

Fri., March 6 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. 
Aspiring student artists and parents are invited to explore South Carolina colleges and university art departments during College Art Day at the South Carolina State Museum. Meet current students and faculty from colleges around the state and hear from alumni applying their art degrees in their professions. Art Day

Sat., March 7 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. 
South Carolina art and artists will be featured with an exceptional day of activities for everyone at Art Day at the South Carolina State Museum. Guests will enjoy hands-on art activities, demonstrations by South Carolina artists, guided behind-the-scenes tours of the museum’s art storage areas and the new art exhibit, Halsey 100. Art Day is included with museum general admission and will take place from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
