The South Carolina State Museum hosts a wide range of fun and fascinating events and programs throughout the year. There is always something new to see and do on every visit.

Planets for the People: Sidewalk Astronomy
Sat., Oct. 4 from 6 to 10 p.m.
Located at: Hunter-Gatherer Brewery & Ale House, 900 Main St., Columbia, SC 29201
Explore the evening sky with State Museum staff and members of the Midlands Astronomy Club! You’ll be able to look through a telescope to observe the moon and more. PLEASE NOTE: this event is not located at the State Museum.
First Citizens First Sunday
Sun., Oct. 5 from 12 to 5 p.m.
General admission to the South Carolina State Museum is only $1 for guests on First Citizens First Sunday!
Included in general admission, guests can explore four floors of South Carolina art, cultural history, natural history and science/technology, including the brand new observatory and the new Robert B. Arial Collection of Historical Astronomy located on the fourth floor.
For an additional price, guests can experience the museum’s new planetarium and 4D theater, as well as the blockbuster exhibit, Dinosaurs: A Bite Out of Time.
Second Shift Twosdays
Every Tuesday from 5 – 8 p.m.
In October, Second Shift Twosdays will feature Halloween-themed laser light shows in the planetarium. At 6 p.m., enjoy HalloScream Laser Lights, a thrilling family-fun laser show featuring Halloween music favorites, including “Thriller,” “Monster Mash,” “Ghostbusters” and “The Purple People Eater.”
At 7 p.m., experience classic rock like never before in Laser Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon, a captivating laser light show that creates a mind-bending landscape of light and sound.
Guests can also explore four floors of South Carolina art, cultural history, natural history and science/technology! There is an additional fee to see the laser light shows, 4D theater shows and for admission to the blockbuster exhibit, Dinosaurs: A Bite Out of Time.
Museum Road Show
This annual signature event offers guests informal (verbal) appraisals of a variety of objects. Museum curators and local experts will be on hand not only to discuss items, but also to provide tips on caring for the objects.
Tricks and Treats I and II
Sat., Oct. 18 and 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The museum’s annual Halloween tradition is back for two weekends of family fun! There will be a haunted Halloween party with games and prizes, a scavenger hunt, crafts, balloon art and much more! PLUS special Halloween shows in the planetarium.
Wear a costume and receive $1 OFF museum general admission for the day. Tricks & Treats activities are included with museum general admission or membership. There is an additional fee to see the laser light shows.
Growl at the Moon
Thurs., Oct. 30 from 7 to 10 p.m.
This after hours Halloween party features an evening of lunar observing, laser light shows, art, live music, food and custom growlers full of craft beer. It’s a chance to look at the moon from the museum’s new observatory and sit back and enjoy an entrancing laser light show set to the music of Pink Floyd in Laser Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon. Be sure to channel the Halloween spirit and come dressed up – werewolf and other costumes are highly encouraged.
