Second Shift Twosdays2ndShift

Every Tuesday from 5 – 8 p.m.
In October, Second Shift Twosdays will feature Halloween-themed laser light shows in the planetarium. At 6 p.m., enjoy HalloScream Laser Lights, a thrilling family-fun laser show featuring Halloween music favorites, including “Thriller,” “Monster Mash,” “Ghostbusters” and “The Purple People Eater.”
At 7 p.m., experience classic rock like never before in Laser Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon, a captivating laser light show that creates a mind-bending landscape of light and sound.
Guests can also explore four floors of South Carolina art, cultural history, natural history and science/technology!  There is an additional fee to see the laser light shows, 4D theater shows and for admission to the blockbuster exhibit, Dinosaurs: A Bite Out of Time.

Tricks and Treats I and IITT2014

Sat., Oct. 18 and 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The museum’s annual Halloween tradition is back for two weekends of family fun! There will be a haunted Halloween party with games and prizes, a scavenger hunt, crafts, balloon art and much more! PLUS special Halloween shows in the planetarium.
Wear a costume and receive $1 OFF museum general admission for the day. Tricks & Treats activities are included with museum general admission or membership. There is an additional fee to see the laser light shows.

Growl at the MoonGrowl at the Moon

Thurs., Oct. 30 from 7 to 10 p.m.
This after hours Halloween party features an evening of lunar observing, laser light shows, art, live music, food, a custom beer growler to take home and more. It’s a chance to look at the moon from the museum’s new observatory and sit back and enjoy an entrancing laser light show set to the music of Pink Floyd in Laser Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon. Be sure to channel the Halloween spirit and come dressed up – werewolf and other costumes are highly encouraged.

Museum Garage Sale

Sat., Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to Noon
MEMBERS ONLY HOUR: 8 to 9 a.m.
The Museum Garage Sale is back! There will be a variety of fun and unusual props and graphics from previous exhibits for sale, including Tutankhamun: Return of the King and Secrets of the Maya. There will also be framed panels from traveling exhibits, as well as office supplies, furniture and more.
Please note: There are no artifacts in the garage sale. All items in the sale are props and were produced to enhance exhibits.

Planets for the People: Sidewalk Astronomy

Sat., Nov. 1 from 6 to 10 p.m.
Location TBD
Explore the evening sky with State Museum staff and members of the Midlands Astronomy Club! You’ll be able to look through a telescope to observe the moon and more. PLEASE NOTE: this event is not located at the State Museum.

First Citizens First SundayFCFirstSunday_Logo

Sun., Nov. 2 from 12 to 5 p.m.
General admission to the South Carolina State Museum is only $1 for guests on First Citizens First Sunday!
Included in general admission, guests can explore four floors of South Carolina art, cultural history, natural history and science/technology, including the brand new observatory and the new Robert B. Arial Collection of Historical Astronomy located on the fourth floor.
For an additional price, guests can experience the museum’s new planetarium and 4D theater, as well as the blockbuster exhibit, Dinosaurs: A Bite Out of Time.

Merry Mondays in the Cotton Mill ExchangeCME logo 250x145

Every Monday in December from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Enjoy special holiday music and gourmet South Carolina-made food samplings while you shop at the Cotton Mill Exchange museum store on Merry Mondays in December. The store is the perfect South Carolina gift destination and carries several local gourmet products made in South Carolina, including coffees, teas, grits, cookies, candies, BBQ sauces, jams and more. Store purchases of $50 or more during “Merry Mondays” will include complementary gift wrapping. The store is open during normal museum hours. Museum admission is not required to shop in the store.
