Free Kids + Cosmically Cool Space Fun

July 17 – 25, 2021

Beat the heat and enjoy a week of cosmically cool fun all about space with FREE general admission for kids under 12! Enjoy exhibition tours, special live sky planetarium experiences, a new 4-d show and lots more.

Activities are included with museum general admission or membership, except for planetarium and 4d shows which are an additional charge. Limit of 10 free kid general admissions per transaction.

The museum will have health and safety precautions in place, including managing capacities in the museum to facilitate social distancing.

Summer Stars Live Sky Experience
Shows daily
This live planetarium presentation takes gusts on a tour of the constellations, planets and other celestial objects that can be seen in the current night sky from right here in Columbia. Learn how the sky changes over the course of the night and journey through space to get a closeup look at Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars. Show Run Time: 30 mins. Please note: planetarium shows are an additional charge.

Apollo 50 Journey to the MoonApollo 50: Journey to the Moon
Now Open
This immersive exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the years of the Apollo program as America raced to accomplish a lunar landing before the Soviet Union. See real artifacts from the Apollo space program, a replica lunar rover and lots more.

The exhibit is free with general admission or membership.

Exhibition Tour – Make Some Noise: The Science of Sound / Haz un poco de ruido: La ciencia del sonido
Tues., July 20 and Thurs., July 22 at 10:30 a.m.
Explore the current exhibition, Make Some Noise: The Science of Sound / Haz un poco de ruido: La ciencia del sonido, on a tour led by State Museum science and technology curator, Meredith Nichter. Discover how sound travels, learn about the process of making instruments and more.

Astronomical Activities
Mon. – Fri., July 19 – 23 at 2:30 p.m.

State Museum educators will assist guests with making their own star wheel (Mon., Wed, and Fri.) or creating a cup phone (Tues. and Thurs.)

Lunar Live Sky Experience
Sat., July 24 at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.

The Moon has been a constant cosmic companion throughout human history. In this special planetarium program, we’ll scan the constellations to find where the Moon is in the current night sky and explore the lunar surface by taking a quick trip to Earth’s nearest neighbor in space. Run time: 30 mins. Please note: planetarium shows are an additional charge

Rocket Launching
Sat., July 24 from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 – 3:30 p.m.

State Museum educators will help guests craft and create their own mini-rockets, before launching them up into the air in the museum’s planetarium lobby!
