Space Week

Enjoy an entire week of space-themed fun at the museum! See shows, enjoy activities, experience night-sky observing, explore the exhibit, Apollo 50: Journey to the Moon, and much more.

Activities are included with museum general admission unless noted ($). Museum members are invited to bring-a-buddy during Space Week. Each member buddy will receive member benefits during their visit.

The museum will have health and safety precautions in place, including managing capacities in the museum to facilitate social distancing as well as frequent cleaning. Per City of Columbia Emergency Ordinance, face coverings will be required for guests aged 10 and above.

Apollo 50 Journey to the Moon

Apollo 50: Journey to the Moon
Now Open
This immersive exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the years of the Apollo program as America raced to accomplish a lunar landing before the Soviet Union. See real artifacts from the Apollo space program, a replica lunar rover and lots more.

The exhibit is free with general admission or membership.

Space Week Special Events

Observatory, Boeing Observatory, South Carolina, Museum, Columbia, Things to do, family funNight Sky Observing
Tues., July 21 from 5 – 10 p.m.
The museum will be open until 10 p.m. for late night cosmically cool fun! Weather permitting, the Boeing Observatory will be open for guests to observe the night sky through the museum’s historic Alvan Clark telescope. Included with museum general admission.

Virtual Trivia Night – SC and Space . . . It’s Out of This World
Thurs., July 23 at 6:30 p.m.

Test your astronomy knowledge and see how much you know about South Carolina’s connections to space exploration. Join our museum team as we bring you a live scored trivia game. Sponsored by Columbia Craft Brewing Company. Registration required. Click here to learn more and register.

Doors open at 6 p.m. Shows at 6:30 p.m., 8 p.m., 9:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Experience full dome planetarium shows with mind-bending visuals set to the music of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and more in the museum’s 55ft Digital Dome Planetarium. Click HERE to learn more.

Space Week fun continues at the State Museum with a cosmically cool day all about astronomy! The museum will be partnering with local community organizations to increase awareness and appreciation for both our world and the universe beyond with special demonstrations, exhibits and shows.
