Field Trips Experiences – Elementary

The State Museum offers a diverse group of field trip experiences for visiting elementary students. The experiences listed below are FREE to South Carolina school students, unless otherwise indicated, and must be booked and finalized with the museum’s Group Visits Department two weeks in advance.

Please carefully read over the list of programs and submit a Field Trip Online Request Form, email or call (803) 898-4999 to book your visit.

Planetarium and 4D Shows

The State Museum’s 55-ft digital dome BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Planetarium and The Rev. Dr. Solomon Jackson, Jr. 4D Interactive Theater can make learning come alive for visiting students and educators. Please note: shows are additional charge of $3.










Museum Experiences

Open Exploration

Open Exploration time allows students and teachers to explore all four floors of the South Carolina State Museum’s collections at their own pace. Open Exploration times are now available Monday through Friday beginning at 9am.

Classroom Programs and Shows

Students and teachers can enjoy a variety of museum educator led classroom programs, as well as planetarium and 4-D theater shows. Please click below to reveal a full list of classes and shows by grade level.

Sept. 2019 – May 2020 Programming Options

Boeing Observatory

The Boeing Observatory opens daily at 10 a.m. to all visiting groups. If your group does not have time to schedule one of the museum educator led classes detailed below, you are still welcome to visit the observatory at any time during your visit. An astronomy educator will be there to greet you.

Field Trips at Night – Second Shift Tuesday

The museum is open late every Tuesday night for planetarium and 4D shows, open exploration, night sky viewing in the observatory and more. Teachers may register as a school group and direct families on the day and time to arrive. At least one teacher representative must be in attendance and your class must pre-registered in advance. Please note: a minimum of 10 students is required.
