South Carolina Remembers 9/11: 25 Years Later
Now Open through April 4, 2027
For a limited time, the museum will feature a display in the Main Lobby, South Carolina Remembers 9/11: 25 Years Later. Guests are invited to explore how our state rallied together through community stories, personal mementos, and artifacts recovered from Ground Zero.
The display also highlights the story of White Knoll Middle School staff and students, who, in 2001, rallied their community to raise over $500,000 to replace Ladder 101, a Brooklyn fire truck that was destroyed on September 11th. The Red Hook Raiders gifted White Knoll Middle School a piece of the original Ladder 101 truck door that was recovered from Ground Zero, which will be on view in this special display.
South Carolina Remembers 9/11 also connects that gift to a promise made in 1867, after New York firefighters raised funds to purchase a fire hose carriage for Columbia after the city suffered a devastating fire when Union troops, led by General Sherman, arrived in the state's capital.
In addition, the display highlights other connections between South Carolina and New York, including the iconic image of Lower Manhattan taken from the International Space Station on September 11, 2001 by astronaut Frank Culbertson, a native of Holly Hill, S.C.
South Carolina Remembers 9/11 will be free for the public to view in the Museum's Main Lobby.

Join SCSM Curator of History Laura Cothran for a special curator talk exploring objects featured in the exhibition and South Carolina’s role in remembering those lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Cothran will be joined by Dr. Jeffrey Brodie, SCSM Chief Engagement and Content Officer, who helped collect memorabilia and artifacts in the aftermath of the attacks.
