A Little Bird Told Us. . . You’ll Love These New Exhibitions
The State Museum will host South Carolina Wings of Wonder as one of two new bird-focused exhibitions opening March 7, 2026, exploring the beauty, diversity, and natural wonder of our feathered friends.
Guests can explore the diversity of South Carolina birds in, South Carolina Wings of Wonder, which will feature specimens and objects from the museum’s extensive natural history collection. The display will highlight the variety of the nearly 450 bird species in our state. Specimens include both common and less-often seen raptors, shorebirds and songbirds. Also included in the exhibition will be the DeCamps bird egg collection, showcasing the beauty and variety of size, shape, and color of bird eggs.
The representation of birds in art and throughout history will be featured, as well as a section on the extinct Carolina parakeet that include the museum’s taxidermy specimen and early depictions of the bird by John James Audubon and Alexander Wilson. Other featured objects include bird carvings by artist Tom Boozer, prints from the museum’s South Carolina Migratory Waterfowl Stamp collection, and items related to South Carolina’s bird hunting traditions.
