Planting South Carolina Roots is a native garden and community seed initiative in partnership with The Riley Institute's DLI Midlands Cohort. We will work with the South Carolina Wildlife Federation to create a Carolina Fence Garden that supports essential habitats and provides educational opportunities, encouraging gardeners of all ages to connect more deeply with our state’s natural history and flora.
A Carolina Fence Garden is a specialized, wildlife-friendly, and educational habitat designed to showcase South Carolina’s natural and cultural history, often featuring a split-rail "worm" fence as its focal point. Developed by the South Carolina Wildlife Federation and partners, these gardens use native plants to attract pollinators and birds.
This initiative will showcase native plants, support pollinators, promote outdoor educational opportunities and welcome visitors as they enter the Museum.
In addition to the Carolina Fence Garden, the Museum is developing a future Carolina Community Seed Library initiative. This library will offer free, open pollinated native seeds, along with workshops and resources to support successful seed saving and planting. Through this effort, we hope to inspire home gardeners to cultivate a greater diversity of native plants in their own gardens.
