Hitting the Road for MORE

SCSM Embarks on a 12-City Make Way for MORE Road Trip

Starting in Aiken, September 9-11

Good news is meant to be shared, which is why a team of Museum and Foundation leaders from the South Carolina State Museum (SCSM) is hitting the road for an energizing and informative 12-city tour to share news of the upcoming and epic metamorphosis planned for nearly 225,000 square feet of public learning space.

Behind this awe-inspiring transformation is the SCSM Foundation’s $15 million Make Way for MORE Revitalization Campaign, launched to renovate and modernize the state’s largest and only multidisciplinary Museum.

“We are excited to take this vision beyond the walls of the Museum and into communities across South Carolina,” says SCSM Executive Director, Amy Bartow-Melia. "This transformation is about creating MORE opportunities for South Carolinians to explore, discover and be inspired."

Updates will impact every floor and gallery, from the entrance and atrium to the education and special events wings. The largest overhaul will be the introduction of a 25,000-square-foot Innovation Wing featuring four dynamic and interactive galleries, including a Smithsonian Spark!Lab, a hands-on invention workspace for children and families.

To ignite interest statewide, Hitting the Road for MORE is the official kickoff to connect MORE South Carolinians with MORE information about the positive upgrades they can look forward to at SCSM. The Museum and Foundation team will meet with community leaders, school districts, museums, businesses, donors, and friends to share exhibition details, discuss Palmetto State inventors and innovations, and celebrate the emerging invention education ecosystem.

“SCSM is a beloved and respected educational landmark on the threshold of a modern metamorphosis,” says SCSM Foundation Executive Director Mary Kathryne Wadford. “Our Hitting the Road for MORE road trip and Make Way for MORE Revitalization Campaign are the inaugural sparks of reinvention as we prepare to make something already amazing even better.”
