This special experience will only be available April 2 - 30, 2022!

The South Carolina State Museum is excited to debut a new planetarium show, Man and the Moon, just in time for Spring Break this April! This digital dome experience is part of the museum's "Apollo April" celebrations that mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 16 lunar mission and SC astronaut Charles Duke's historic walk on the Moon.

This 30-minute program aims to showcase not only the Moon itself but also to highlight the Apollo 16 mission’s role in exploring a world beyond our own. Using the planetarium’s digital sky system, audiences will be able to take a trip to the Apollo 16 landing site and gaze back at our home planet, to simulate the view that John Young and South Carolina’s own Charlie Duke had decades ago when they stood in the Descartes Highlands.

Man and the Moon goes beyond simple astronomy to focus on humanity’s relationship with the Moon and how it has played an important role in encouraging us to – quite literally - expand our horizons. This is done in the context of Apollo 16 by sharing a little bit of its history. Since it’s impossible to tell the full story of Apollo 16 in a half hour, guests are encouraged to also visit the new exhibition, Apollo 16 & Beyond: South Carolina in Space, opening April 9th.
