Explore major Revolutionary War battles that occurred in South Carolina.
South Carolina played a significant role during the American Revolution, where over 200 engagements (battles and skirmishes) took place, more than any other colony during the war. This exhibit highlights major battles that took place in South Carolina, including the Battle of Sullivan’s Island, the Cherokee Attack and the Battle of Cowpens, as well as the role that African Americans and women played in the war.

Borrower’s Responsibility
The Borrower is the person who schedules the exhibits for your institution. This person is responsible for supervising the booking, publicity, receiving and returning, unpacking and packing, handling and hanging of the shows, as well as accepting the liability for them.
Conditions of Loan
1. The exhibit elements which may consist of panels, artifacts, original works of art, reproductions and teaching materials shall be fully insured by the Borrower while on display and while transported. The Borrower agrees to provide all risk, wall-to-wall insurance coverage during transit and display of the exhibit against all risks of physical loss or damage from any external cause. The amount payable by insurance secured in accordance with this agreement is the sole recovery available to the Lender from the Borrower in the event of loss and damage. The Borrower will provide the Lender with a certificate of insurance coverage. The Lender shall provide an itemized appraisal of Exhibit items should it be needed in case of damage or loss.
2. Exhibit elements shall be transported and exhibited in such a manner that no physical deterioration results. Please make a note of damage upon unpacking. In the event of restorable damage to an object, Borrower bears the cost of repair or the total value as listed, if irreparably damaged.
3. The objects shall be exhibited under appropriate conditions of security, an attendant shall be present in the exhibit area whenever visitors are present and the exhibit area shall be secured during non-visitation hours. In the event of loss or theft of an object, the Borrower shall reimburse the Lender in the amount listed for it on the loan form.
4. Exhibit elements shall not be repaired, retouched, reproduced, nor altered in any way except with written permission from the South Carolina State Museum.
5. The exhibit elements shall not be lent to other organizations without written permission from the South Carolina State Museum.
Security Requirements
To meet the needs of the varied organizations that participate in our Traveling Exhibits Program, we offer exhibitions that require different levels of security. To determine which of the three categories your institution falls under, each exhibitor is asked to complete an abbreviated Standard Facility Report. The security category may require a site visit from a State Museum staff member. The security levels include: high, moderate and limited.
High Security
Space
• Exhibit may be displayed in a museum or controlled-access gallery only.
• An open mall, hallway or lounge is not acceptable.
• No exhibit may be displayed outdoors.
Protection
• Trained professional guards in sufficient numbers to adequately protect objects.
• Security guards during after hours and/or an electronic alarm system.
• Provisions to prevent the public from touching objects.
• Locked cases for small or fragile objects.
• Handling of objects by a curator or a registrar only.
Environmental Controls
• Temperature, humidity and light controls.
• Fire alarm system and other fire protection devices according to local ordinances.
Moderate Security
Space
• Exhibit may be displayed in a limited-access area.
• An open mall, hallway or lounge area is not acceptable.
• No exhibit may be displayed outdoors.
Protection
• Trained persons on duty in the room with the exhibit to supervise.
• Locked or secured cases for small or fragile objects.
• Exhibit area must be locked and secure after hours.
• An alarm system is preferred.
• Handling objects by person trained in care of museum objects.
Environmental Controls
• Temperature and light control.
• Fire protection according to local ordinances.
Limited Security
Space
• Exhibits may be displayed in a gallery or lounge area, preferably not in a hallway.
• No exhibit may be displayed outdoors.
Protection
• Someone (volunteer, student, receptionist) must be near the exhibit to supervise.
• Exhibit area must be locked and secure after hours.
Environmental Controls
• Temperature and light control.
• Fire protection according to local ordinances.
