Personal Photography and Filming
Photography for personal use is allowed with hand-held devices at the State Museum. (Exceptions apply for certain pieces within the museum’s collection. These exceptions are noted on-site.)
Tripods, monopods, external lights, tracks, and other types of equipment are prohibited.
Bridal or wedding party photography is permitted only if the party is renting space at the Museum as a special events venue.
Photography and filming intended solely for commercial use* is prohibited unless given prior written approval by State Museum’s Marketing and Communications department. Any party seeking to photograph or film at the South Carolina State Museum for commercial use must fill out the form below and email it to firstname.lastname@example.org a minimum of two weeks in advance.
*Commercial use is defined as 1) any non-personal use that promotes a product, service, firm or organization (both profit and non-profit); or, 2) any use undertaken for a business purpose rather than for hobby, recreational, journalistic or other similar purposes.
The goal of the South Carolina State Museum’s social media presence is to tell meaningful stories, build connections with our community and raise awareness of the museum as an educational resource. We strive to create engaging, informative and inspiring social media content that provokes conversations about the museum’s collection, exhibitions and events.
We encourage our online community to comment and engage with each other with courtesy, respect and good intent. We reserve the right to remove any posts, replies, or content, and block or report users who post such comments and/or content that include the following:
- Threatening language, harassment, violence, racism, bullying, profanity, attacks on or intimidation of anyone, including our online community or State Museum staff
- Disparaging content regarding gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, ethnic origin or race; sexist comments; and/or hate speech
- Solicitations, advertisements, endorsements, contests or promotions
- Repetitive posts copied and pasted or duplicated and/or multiple successive off-topic posts by single or multiple users
- Comments that suggest or encourage illegal activity
- Information that is false, inaccurate or misleading
- Messages impersonating a museum representative or claiming to speak on behalf of the State Museum

The State Museum’s social media channels are monitored by a small team of museum staff on a periodic basis during regular business hours, excluding holidays. Content shared outside those times will be reviewed as time allows during regular business hours.
